Oxford and the Cotswolds. A glorious combination of ancient university buildings, honey-coloured stone cottages, picturesque market towns and rolling English countryside where even the sheep appear to have inherited a certain amount of social standing. It’s a landscape of winding roads, historic villages and charming country pubs, where the greatest danger to the unsuspecting traveller is discovering that the delightful little lane they’ve chosen is approximately six inches narrower than their motor car.
Fortunately, Geographia was on hand to provide assistance.
Welcome to Oxford and the Cotswolds – Sheet 6, a wonderfully nostalgic touring map dating from approximately 1975, when exploring the British countryside involved a folded paper map, a reasonable sense of direction and the occasional heated disagreement between driver and navigator over whether that junction had actually appeared on the map.
The region itself offers a magnificent mixture of history, architecture and natural beauty. Oxford, with its dreaming spires, venerable colleges and centuries of academic achievement, provides an appropriately intellectual starting point. Here, generations of scholars have devoted their lives to understanding the mysteries of existence, although finding somewhere reasonably priced to park remains an unsolved problem.
Beyond the city lie the Cotswolds, a landscape of limestone villages, undulating hills, historic market towns and country lanes that seem to have been designed long before anyone anticipated the invention of the motor car.
Places such as Burford, Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water and Chipping Norton evoke an England of ancient inns, medieval churches and buildings constructed from golden stone that somehow manages to look attractive even when the weather is behaving appallingly.
Published around 1975, this Geographia map also offers an intriguing historical snapshot of the region before half a century of subsequent changes. Roads have been improved, towns have expanded, and formerly peaceful stretches of countryside have encountered the attentions of developers, commuters and local authorities determined to demonstrate the benefits of another roundabout.
For collectors of vintage maps and enthusiasts of historical geography, older touring maps provide a fascinating opportunity to examine how familiar places were presented to motorists before satellite navigation transformed the simple business of getting lost into a technologically sophisticated experience.
And this particular example has clearly seen some service.
Offered in Fair condition by Crappy Old Books, the map has had a tear along one of its folds repaired with brown paper, returning it to a more usable state and making it ready for another expedition into the field. The repair is visible and entirely practical, rather than an attempt to disguise the map’s previous adventures.
There is something wonderfully appropriate about repairing an old map instead of throwing it away. After all, a map is supposed to help people travel, not spend eternity folded neatly inside a drawer, awaiting inspection by somebody wearing cotton gloves.
This circa 1975 Geographia Sheet 6 is an appealing acquisition for collectors of vintage cartography, Oxfordshire historians, Cotswold enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates a traditional touring map with a little character.
A charming reminder of an age when navigating the English countryside required patience, observation and a willingness to admit that the shortest route might not necessarily be the quickest.
And thanks to its modest brown-paper repair, this veteran of the highways and byways is prepared to venture forth once more.
Just remember that the map may be from 1975.
The road you’re looking for might not be.
